Background

The Fly-Tipping Solutions Package was originally commissioned by the Cambridge & Peterborough Waste Partnership’s fly-tipping working group. The enforcement and communication colleagues were looking for ideas for signage messaging.

The delivery team, the Sustainable Sidekicks, took a behavioural science approach to the work which led to a far more comprehensive range of solutions for the waste practitioners to adopt.

Furthermore the package includes processes to follow and tools to use to develop out holistic campaigns which consider the core principles of the waste hierarchy , reduction and reuse before disposal.

  • “"We commissioned this guide to understand why people fly-tip and which interventions effectively change their behaviour. The guide presents new ideas and methods, showing what works—and what doesn't—in this field”

Bryony Rothwell, Cambridge & Peterborough Waste Partnership Manager

About the Fly-Tipping Solutions delivery team

The Sustainable Sidekicks exist to support changemakers to be more impactful. This includes providing research and project support for waste reduction, recycling engagement and pro-environmental behaviour engagement campaigns.

Through desk-based research, qualitative interviews and quantitative research the team helps local authorities uncover the barriers to change for their residents and the changes and communication messages to adopt.

We also train teams in applying behavioural science to tackle environmental challenges, ensuring sustainability efforts are practical, scalable, and long-lasting.
